Led by renowned photographer and educator Andy Golding FRPS this hands-on workshop introduces the creative and technical fundamentals of studio lighting. It is designed to build confidence in selecting, positioning and controlling studio lights, while developing an understanding of how lighting choices shape the character, mood and meaning of a photograph.
In advance of the full day studio experience we begin with an online video introduction to familiarise you with the principals of light: hard and soft sources, direction, exposure, contrast and lighting ratios. Participants are introduced to modifiers that control the light including reflectors, umbrellas, softboxes, flags and barn doors.
The intensive six-hour studio sessions put’s these principles into practice. Focusing primarily on portraiture the group explore single source lighting before progressing to two and three point setups using key, fill, rim and background lighting. Practical exercises develop both technical proficiency and creative decision making.
Working in small groups you will receive hands-on experience and feedback leaving with professional quality portrait and self-portrait images and the knowledge to recreate these lighting setups using studio flash or portable flashguns in your own practice.
