At South Hill Park we aim to celebrate our artists of today and develop the artists of tomorrow

South Hill Park is a creative hub, dedicated to providing an enriching environment for artists of all levels on their creative journey. We encourage participation in all art forms; through performances, theatre, exhibitions, advocacy, education and outreach, serving as a vital creative resource for the community.

None of this would be possible without our family of skilled tutors and artists who provide their invaluable support, teaching and encouragement.

Artists in Residence

South Hill Park has a number of Artists in Residence who are specialists in their mediums and tutor many of our courses and workshops. They cover a variety of arts and craft disciplines, including printmaking, ceramics and jewellery and silversmithing.

Read more on our Artists in Residence page.

We work with a huge number of talented tutors on a regular basis, covering a wide variety of Performing and Visual Arts topics.

These include:

  • Studio Artists sharing their expertise in printmaking, ceramics and jewellery and silversmithing
  • Artists leading our sessions in drawing and painting, stained glass, textiles, dance and music
  • Holistic tutors leading our health and well-being based sessions.

Showcasing local talent

Providing a platform for the next generation of theatrical talent

At South Hill Park, we want to nurture local artists as their careers develop.

As an example, Keir Buist has spent more of his life at South Hill Park than he hasn’t, growing up on-and-off our Wilde and Studio Theatre stages. A bursary from a local charity when he was 10-years-old opened up the arts world to him and Keir credits his personal, professional and performing education at South Hill Park as the making of him.

Read a transcript of Keir’s thoughts on South Hill Park and his journey.

Our Studio Theatre is a fantastic space for new writers, directors and performers to utilise. As a flexible, black box environment, it provides a hub for diverse and unique story telling and avant-garde productions.

Exhibitions

By providing free-to-attend, public exhibition space, we are able to support local artists as well as showcase the work of our outreach projects, partners, tutors and students.

We have a number of spaces, including our Mirror Gallery, Wilde Community Gallery and Balcony Gallery. Our exhibition programme reflects a wide variety of themes, previously also including our 50th Anniversary celebrations.

To mark South Hill Park’s 50th anniversary, we commissioned UCA MA Fine Art student, Oluwafemi Babalola, to create an amazing mural by the Printmaking Studio staircase.

Oluwafemi’s work was part of the exhibition Residual, a reflective response to the mansion, curated by Andrea Gregson, UCA senior lecturer in Fine Art. The mural features the artwork from the exhibition, which was inspired by the Garden Room door handle (surrounded by masks which represent the ghosts and spirits that could be lingering withing the premises), alongside extended paintwork which includes inspirations of elements found in the building such as the fireplace and ceiling floral motifs.

Student Open

Our Annual Student Open exhibition invites all of South Hill Park’s talented visual arts students to show the work they’ve developed over the past year – offering visitors an opportunity to view, enjoy and purchase some exceptional pieces.

Featuring an array of artworks from across the Art Centre’s courses, including ceramics, printmaking, stained glass, life drawing, oil painting, jewellery and silversmithing, quilt making, embroidery and crochet. The exhibition showcases the passion, patience, effort and skill invested into every single artwork by both students and tutors.

It’s also an opportunity to appreciate the hard work of all South Hill Park staff who support them throughout the year.

Festivals and Fairs

Every year we open our doors wide for our Festivals and Fairs, many of which are free to attend. These are our opportunity to showcase a wealth of artistic talent, all in the beautiful grounds of South Hill Park.

Resident & Associate Companies

We are proud to host our Resident and Associate Companies. These include Blackeyed Theatre, one of the UK’s leading mid-scale touring theatre companies who been creating exciting opportunities for artists and audiences by producing theatre that’s audacious, accessible and memorable since 2004. Artemis College is a leading vocational performing arts college offering completely free, full time vocational training sixth form, summer intensives and gap year courses to aspiring young performers, between the ages of 16 and 19.
