Please note, you can only book a place on the Centre of Excellence: Ceramics Foundation course if you have never attended a ceramics course before.
The Ceramic Centre of Excellence is a unique long-form training programme designed for participants who want to move beyond casual pottery classes and develop genuine technical skill, creative confidence and artistic understanding within a supportive studio environment.
This carefully crafted programme is designed for those who are absolute beginners in Ceramics and are looking to develop a new skill from scratch.
Unlike traditional mixed-ability ceramics sessions, this 30-week programme offers structured, tutor-led progression with participants grouped by similar experience level. Through step-by-step tuition, demonstrations and guided studio practice, participants will develop a strong foundation in both the technical and creative aspects of ceramics.
30 week Intermediate and Advanced courses will be added to the programme over the coming months, which will be available to book once you have completed your beginners course.
Across three terms, the course will explore:
* Hand-building techniques
* Wheel throwing and centring
* Surface decoration and texture
* Trimming and finishing
* Glazing methods and application
* Understanding clay bodies and materials
* Kiln processes and studio practice
* Developing form, style and creative confidence
Participants will work on a wide variety of projects designed to steadily build technical ability whilst encouraging individual artistic development. As skills progress, learners will be supported to refine their own creative voice and increasingly work with greater independence and confidence.
By learning within a consistent cohort over an extended period, participants benefit from:
* Greater continuity of learning
* Structured progression
* Personalised tutor feedback
* A stronger studio community
* Clearer technical development
* Increased confidence working independently
The Ceramic Centre of Excellence reflects South Hill Park’s wider commitment to high-quality creative learning and provides an opportunity to experience ceramics training in a more focused, ambitious and professionally led environment.
