Audition information

Auditions will be in a workshop format. There is no need to prepare anything in advance, and we will provide scenes for you to work with on the day. Those auditioning for a specific Prime Minister will work on a couple of pages from that character’s scenes. Anyone auditioning for one of the two Queen Elizabeth roles will then rotate through those scenes. We’ll start by reading the section together and then work on it a few times to explore the characters.

Creativity thrives on diversity, and we welcome everyone, regardless of background or experience. We are not looking for impersonations but for actors who can truly inhabit the character’s essence; we’ll work with you through performance and costume to evoke the role. So don’t worry if you’re not a dead ringer already for the character you’re auditioning for. The characters need to be big, animated, memorable – and will be a lot of fun to play!

The role of Young Elizabeth is open to a female junior actor who can perform a playing age of 12yo. We will audition for this role separately from the adult auditions. The Studio Theatre follows South Hill Park’s Child Safeguarding Policies.

Please find out more in the full Audition Information Pack and complete our online audition form to let us know your intention to audition.

Show summary

“Oh, dear. Did no one explain? The Sovereign never offers a Prime Minister refreshment. Nor a chair.”

For seventy years, Elizabeth II met each of her Prime Ministers in a private, weekly meeting, known as the audience. The meetings were not minuted nor recorded. No one else was present. At the first audience, she was a young mother of twenty-five. By the last, a great grandmother.

The Audience is an intimate portrait of the late Queen and of the individuals around whom the second Elizabethan Age played out. From Winston Churchill to David Cameron, Peter Morgan (writer of The Crown) conjures up characters in moments between the affairs of state – cranky, compelling, funny – ‘our most senior elected public servant and our head of state… just flesh and blood.’
