Romeo and Juliet
South Hill Park is looking for community actors to take part in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet which is being directed by Joe Malyan (The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (2017) Macbeth (2017) Peter Pan (2016), The Borrowers (2015)). This is a play, with songs, taking place in the Wilde Theatre at the beginning of February 2017. The performances run from Tuesday 6th February through until Saturday 10th February.
The set will be designed by Victoria Spearing and the costumes by Anne Thomson. Music will be composed by George Jennings.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Capulet – age 35-60. Male. Juliet’s father. Lead supporting role. Confident, strong actor required.
Capulet’s Wife – age 35-60. Female. Juliet’s mother. Lead supporting role. Confident, strong actor required.
Montague – age 35-60. Romeo’s father. Supporting role.
Montague’s wife – age 35-60. Romeo’s mother. Supporting role.
Tybalt – age 18-40. Juliet’s cousin. Lead supporting role. Confident, strong actor required. Will be required to sword fight.
Mercutio – age 18-40. Friend of Romeo. Lead supporting role. Confident, strong actor required. Will be required to sword fight.
Benvolio – age 14-26. Romeo’s cousin. Lead supporting role. Confident, strong actor required. Will be required to sword fight.
Nurse – age 35-60. Juliet’s nurse. Lead supporting role. Confident comedic actress required.
Paris – age 18-35. Suitor to Juliet. Lead supporting role. Confident, strong actor required. Will be required to sword fight.
Prince – age 18-60. Governor of Verona. Supporting role.
Friar Laurence – age 25-60. Lead supporting role.
Ensemble – various ages. Several speaking parts. Multi-rolling may be required.
There will also be an ensemble of singers required for this production. Auditions for these part will be held late October or early November.
REHEARSALS
Sundays and Tuesday evenings in December up until Christmas
Weekday evenings, and weekends from the 5th January.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE SOME MATINEE WEEKDAY PERFORMANCES and a DAY TIME TECHNICAL REHEARSAL SO PLEASE DO NOT AUDITION IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO COMMIT TO THESE TIMES/DAYS
AUDITIONS
Auditions are by appointment, each lasting 15 minutes.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your allocated audition time, which will be given to you once you have emailed the contact below.
Please specify which role you would like to audition for when emailing Joe Malyan.
What to prepare:
- One monologue of your choice by your chosen character from Romeo and Juliet. You will be expected to learn this.
- One contrasting monologue from any other Shakespeare. Around 1-2 minutes long.
Audition Dates –Wednesday 4th October 2017 and Friday 6th October 2017 by appointment. They will take place in the Bracknell Gallery at South Hill Park.

Saturday 3rd February and Sunday 4th February – TECH PM
Monday 5th– DRESS PM
PLEASE DO NOT AUDITION IF YOU CANNOT COMMIT TO THE ENTIRE REHEARSAL AND PRODUCTION PERIOD. CANDIDATES WHO AUDITION WHO CAN THEN NOT MAKE ALL DATES MAY NOT BE CONSIDERED.
