A Studio Theatre Production
The Audience by Peter Morgan
Directed by Jess Edwards & David Wembridge
“Oh, dear. Did no one explain? The Sovereign never offers a Prime Minister refreshment. Nor a chair.”
For seventy years, Elizabeth II met each of her Prime Ministers in a private, weekly meeting, known as the audience. The meetings were not minuted nor recorded. No one else was present. At the first audience, she was a young mother of twenty-five. By the last, a great grandmother.
The Audience is an intimate portrait of the late Queen and of the individuals around whom the second Elizabethan Age played out. From Winston Churchill to David Cameron, Peter Morgan (writer of The Crown) conjures up characters in moments between the affairs of state—cranky, compelling, funny—‘our most senior elected public servant and our head of state… just flesh and blood.’.
Running time: 2h 20 min (including interval)
Age recommendation: 10yrs+
