Acclaimed pianist Ernest So presents a captivating program of rarely heard musical treasures. Known for his deep connection to late Romantic Russian, French, Spanish, and Latin American piano music, Ernest’s performances are a blend of charm and thought-provoking depth—enhanced by his engaging live commentary.
This special recital pays tribute to two Ukrainian composers and two modern American ragtime pioneers. A highlight of the evening is the British première of Five Etudes-Tableaux by Andriy Shtogarenko (1902–1992), a powerful work that has taken over 40 years to reach Western audiences. Also featured are pieces by Sergei Bortkiewicz (1877–1952), whose lush Romanticism continues to captivate listeners. In the second half, experience the revival of ragtime through the works of William Bolcom (b. 1938) and William Albright (1944–1998). These 20th-century composers infused the genre with fresh sounds and deeper meaning, carrying the legacy of Scott Joplin into new creative territory.
