A new play about the extraordinary life and work of trailblazing ceramic artist Clarice Cliff. Clarice’s striking, colourful and innovative designs have made her a household name, some of her most famous pieces have sold for thousands of pounds and her work is still widely collected today. Her vibrant and joyful patterns represented the new modern spirit of the 1930’s for women, literally bringing sunshine on a plate into many homes. Clarice’s story is one of inspiration and determination and the play, which includes images of some of her iconic work, celebrates her rise from humble working class beginnings to become the first female art director of a famous commercial firm. Although she was born into a world where a woman’s place was in the home nothing intimidated her and she was not afraid to break the rules and stand out. In public Clarice was described as one of the romances of the pottery trade and a poet in pottery, but her private life concealed a heart wrenching secret which could have ruined her..
