Jan Gaska

Delve deeper into the work of artist Jan Gaska after being inspired by his exhibition. This workshop will look at a tonalism, a way of painting which emphasises mood and shadow. Initially students will concentrate on the importance of getting the tonal values right as an underpainting, which will underpin the painting. This will include how to chose a view, considerations of composition, focus, simplification, and importance of edges. These considerations will apply throughout the painting process till completion. With the application of colour we will look at getting colours to correspond with values in your underpainting, and the awareness of colour temperature and desaturation in creating a convincing atmosphere and sense of distance.

For Intermediates/Advances – The workshop is aimed at people with some experience in using oil paints with some understanding of drawing (not beginners).

Materials List

Participants will need to bring at least 3 different photographic reference materials of landscapes. Oil paints, brushes, palette, a non turpentine/white spirit substitute and small scale canvas board. The canvas board should be 24 x 30 cm (no larger than 30 x 40 cm).Suggested colours: burnt umber, ultramarine blue, quinacridone magenta & cobalt teal (or a dioxazine deep purple), lemon yellow, yellow ochre, cadmium red, viridian, titanium white & ivory black.

Tutor Biography

Jan Gaska studied Fine Art Ba hons. at the Surrey institute of Art & Design (1994-1997) followed by Illustration & Printmaking Ma degree at Bucks University College (2000-2003). He further developed His work in printmaking during a 2-year printmaking residency at South Hill Park Arts Centre (2004-2006). At a suggestion from a lecturer during my master’s study, he began to paint in oils. In 2016 he did a drawing scholarship with the New English Art Club. Most recently he done a portrait mentorship with Arthur Gain from the Barcelona Academy. He has exhibited widely with a handful of solo shows under my belt.

“Though portraiture and landscape are seemingly different subjects, both are illuminated by light. My intention in painting is to describe form by observing how light effects the subject, in a balance of tonal values and temperature values in colour. Building up the drama through subtleties such as depth and atmosphere. I hope to bring honesty to my paintings through observation and react to the subject on a personal level.”
