Feeling the Beat: Live painting, music and poetry seminar

In this enriching and imaginative (c.1 hour) seminar, visual artists Chris Holley and Aurelie Freoua and musicians share with you a new skill that will stay with you for life. The artists, each in their own studio and at their own canvas – with painting materials aplenty – demonstrate ways to express music and poetry via paint on canvas.

Accompanied by two musicians, Simon Cook (bandoneon) and Liam Noble (piano), they show how the textures, rhythms, colours, tempo and structures of the music – and later, poetry recitation – translate to painting. As you hear long, short, loud, soft, high and low musical notes – you simultaneously see the artists’ responses take vibrant shape on canvas. In another fun twist, the musicians play what the artists paint, showing how the colours, marks and artists’ gestures translate to musical sound.

The first rule of this fascinating exploration of cross-art-form creativity is that there are no rules! So you may – from the comfort of your home – want to join Chris and Aurelie, when they interpret the brief music finale. And who knows, with your favourite art materials and best loved recorded music to hand, you may well find a new and absorbing pastime.

Suitable for all ages.
