Ceramics – Improvers/Advanced
Karen Marks
This course is for students who have tried pottery before who want to develop and improve their techniques further.
For classes in the Ceramics Studio, please ensure that long hair is tied back, avoid wearing dangly items of clothing or jewellery, and wear covered shoes (no sandals). Please bring with you an apron, and a notebook and pen. All basic tools, clay and a selection of dipping glazes are provided in the studio, but you are welcome to bring your own tools. Work is charged by finished weight after the final firing, and the cost charged will depend on the type of clay used.
Karen is a Ceramic Artist, graduating from the University for The Creative Arts in Farnham with a BA (Hons) in Ceramics (Three Dimensional Design). She specialises in working in porcelain, which is not the easiest clay to work with. Karen adds oxides to her work to creative a palette of colours which is then thrown with the white porcelain. Her work is thrown and altered while damp, to capture the movement and energy of the sea. Karen teaches adult classes during term time. She provides structured projects for students who are new to ceramics, helping them to identify their preferred interests and techniques, as well as encouraging regular students to expand their creative skills. During the holidays she also holds workshops for children and adults. Her work has been exhibited at the Oxo Tower Wharf and Mall Galleries in London, Salisbury Arts Centre and Rye Creative Centre, Quay Arts Centre on the Isle of Wight, The Old Fire Station Gallery in Henley, and Chelsea College of Art and Design. She is also a regular exhibitor at Art in Clay at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. She is a Member of the Society for Designer Craftsmen. Website: http://www.karenmarks.co.uk
