ARC - Providing free information, guidance and support for creative practitioners
WHO is it for? arc is a professional development programme for visual artists at all stages of their careers and artist’ based groups in the South East region.
WHAT is it? The main elements of the programme are:
- Networking meetings every other month, where you can meet other practicing artists and see presentations by high quality artists
- One to one advice surgeries to artists, available once a month at each venue
- Specialist advice available to artists’ groups
Where does it take place? The scheme is co-ordinated by arc: Artist Resource Centre at aspex, Portsmouth and is taking place in partnership with South Hill Park, De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, Fabrica, Brighton, OVADA in association with Modern Art Oxford, The Lightbox, Woking, and Turner Contemporary, Margate. Further information about ARC at: http://www.aspex.org.uk/arc.htm
Free one-to-one surgeries for artists and artists’ groups
Surgery Sessions take place at each of the partner organisations once a month. They last around 45 minutes and are with an artist advisor. Every member of the advisory team is a practicing artist with a wide variety of skills and experience.
Artists can use these sessions to get critical feedback on work, or to discuss career development, fundraising, presenting work, making proposals or a particular project you are involved with.
How to get involved? If you would like to join the arc mailing list or attend a free one to one surgery at South Hill Park, please call Hannah or Yi-Fang 01344 416252 or email at exhibitions.intern@southhillpark.org.uk. We would also love to hear your ideas for future arc events. Please note these sessions are popular and, therefore, there is penalty of £25 for failing to attend a booked session without a cancellation.
arc advisor profiles
We are pleased to introduce two new advisors Paul Stanley and Susan Diab who will also now provide advise at South Hill Park with our long-standing, fine art advisor Lee Simmons and crafts advisor Beatrice Mayfield . Every advisor has her/him own specialism, therefore we recommend that you read their profiles carefully and book a session for the advisor whose expertise is the most appropriate to your creative work.
Lee Simmons, arc Artist Advisor
Lee is a freelance artist who makes temporary environmental interventions and works on relational projects. She often works on self-initiated projects, outside the formal arts infrastructure of the gallery and the commission brief. She enjoys stumbling across objects, processes and people that interest her, and fuel a period of research, and then develops works in an organic way, often creating strings of linked projects. She has worked as a lead artist for the charitable organisation Art Monkeys, where she set up new cross art form projects, an artists' forum and helped sustain and develop existing projects with diverse groups throughout the Isle Of Thanet. See www.leesimmons.org
Susan Diab, arc Artist Advisor
Susan’s practice is ideas-driven and includes installation, sculpture, events, sound and text. Given this range you should expect to find her work materialized in a number of contexts from public galleries, to artist publications and websites, e.g. ‘finetuned’ www.finetuned.org/index.php?aid=27. Recently her work was shown across six public galleries in Southampton and Sunderland in the exhibition ‘North and South’: www.soton.ac.uk/~hansard/exhibition/archive/2007/northsouth.htm. In 2008 her work is being presented at conferences in Reykjavík, Iceland and Bergen, Norway She has undertaken many residencies and public commissions as well as working from a studio base at APEC Studios in Hove of which she was a founder member. She teaches Critical Fine Art Practice at Brighton University and is an artist-mentor in several contexts. This represents her commitment to promoting best working conditions for artists to have fulfilling and rewarding careers in their chosen profession.
Paul Stanley, arc Artist Advisor
Paul is an artist and independent curator who has been involved in the development and running of artist led organisations such as Bankley Studios Gallery, Manchester and The View From Here, Glasgow. In 2004 Stanley set up the art collaboration [deletia] which he now co-edits with Lynn Harris. [Deletia] purchase ad space in various magazines and use this space for the presentation, preservation and promotion of art. Piggy backing on existing platforms allows us to create non-linear, ahistoric reflections on visual culture. A collective and accumulative ‘snail-trail’ can be seen at www.deletia.org.uk. During November and December 2007 Stanley was artist in residence at USF Verftet in Bergen Norway.
Beatrice Mayfield, arc Co-ordinator
Beatrice has gained a broad background in supporting applied artists since her graduation from Chelsea School of Art in the early 1990s. She combines her role at aspex with that of Professional Development Manager at the Crafts Council.
