About nocturn dance
nocturn dance are the ‘dance macabre’ of the digital world. We seek out unconventional opportunities for contemporary dance, experimenting with interactive work, blending performance art with social media.
John Darvell, Artistic Director is a choreographer, dance artist and experienced community dance practitioner. His pathway into dance was unusual and began at age 30, having worked in new media for 15 years. His experience of technology and working across multiple platforms informs his choreographic process.
nocturn dance runs an extensive adult community, educational and youth dance programme across the Thames Valley. John has written for the People Dancing, NDTA, is regularly on air (BBC Oxfordshire) and is Secretary to the NDTA board.
nocturns recent work ‘dareyouwatch’ was a SHP Live commissioned piece funded by ACE, West Berkshire Council and Newbury College. This ambitious work integrated story telling, digital cinema and online interaction in an immersive site specific performance streamed live over 18 hours – the culmination of a 72-day transmedia campaign. Over 6,000 unique visitors to site, 6,500 Facebook ‘Likes’, an online viewing audience of 1,200 from 16 countries.
Recent collaborations include a live stream performance for Jon Lockharts visual art installation ‘The Boundless Museum’, at Reading Museum; ‘The Fortress’ an outdoor touring show by Beautiful Creatures at Caversham Festival 2014 (audiences over 2000); plus being Hub Choreographer for large scale production ‘Tree of Light’, involving 1200 participants, for the 2012 Games.
