This month Berkshire takes a giant leap into the world of Science Fiction with a series of out of this world screenings and talks taking place at South Hill Park Cinema and Reading Film Theatre.

In a brand new partnership Bracknell Film Society, Reading Film Theatre and South Hill Park are presenting Science Fiction, Science Fact – a season celebrating science fiction, the world’s most popular film genre.

The season of 6 classic and contemporary sci-fi films has been programmed to illustrate the vast range of topics within genre – from space exploration to alien invasion to Man’s scientific endeavours.

Each film will be introduced by an expert from the University of Reading with a talk that investigates artistic or scientific aspects of the film, such as whether the scenarios in the films are feasible using modern day technology and understanding.

The selection of films showing at South Hill Park reflects Bracknell’s development in the 1960s when many high-tech and scientific companies were attracted to the town, including those in aerospace, IT and communications. And, of course, Bracknell was home to the Met Office until 2003. The South Hill Park mansion, occupied today by the arts centre, was used by Ferranti Limited as offices and laboratories from 1965 until early 1972.

Ron McAllister, Chief Executive of South Hill Park says: “We’re delighted to have received funding from the new BFI Film Hub South East to support such an innovative season of linked talks and film screenings. This is an exciting new partnership between the prime cultural film exhibitors in the area and we hope it heralds many more joint cinema activities across Berkshire.”

Juliet Hanfling, Chair of Reading Film Theatre commented: “We are pleased to be able to team up with South Hill Park and Bracknell Film Society to produce this exciting programme of Sci-fi films. The opportunity to combine a thought-provoking film and a lecture from one of the University’s leading members of staff ought to guarantee an entertaining and interesting evening for the audience.”

Julia Vickers, Chair of Bracknell Film Society says: “Science fiction may not be a genre that many people are familiar with or usually seek out. This season provides an opportunity to learn more about such films and a rare opportunity for audiences to experience on the big screen some of the best sci-fi cinema ever made, with the added bonus of fascinating talks that give a real insight into the genre.”
